There seems to be quite the fuss about visual novels abroad, recently. From the worse ones dealing with really sensitive subjects in a really insensitive manner, the whole genre has become the sum of its worst parts, causing us to forget something really interesting: a lot of recent anime has been inspired by the genre. For my next post, I’ll be talking about the genre and what it’s done for anime, but in the mean time, here’s a comic after the jump about that: Read More »

Visual Style? Check.

Visual Style? Check.

Before I go into my deeply personal confession of my love for something only slightly related to anime but totally related to Japan, I’d like to note that since the style has changed, back posts will be evermore oddly formatted. I’ve tried a couple of changes to offset this odd and noticeable change, but I’d like you as the reader to bear with it. That in mind, これを始めようか?

I noted to a friend a couple of days ago that I’m an absolute whore for the Final Fantasy series. Anything they throw at me I hoard greedily like some sort of dragon.

The most recent example of this was when I borrow my brother’s Final Fantasy XII and, after playing about 15 hours, realized my abiding love for it and immediately went out and bought my own copy. Was this necessary? Of course not! Buying an extra copy of any series of games, especially when your brother isn’t going to ask for his copy back is ludicrous.

Or is it? If you’ve been keeping up with your Squenix (because I’m guessing that’s how you actually write that bastardization of Square-Enix), you’ll know that the company’s been struggling to put new IPs on the market. Sure, they have a thriving business at the moment, but also, if you’ll note, that’s been from nice products like FFVII:AC on PSP, FFVII on PSN, FFIV:The After Story on WiiWare, FFIV on DS, and… are you noticing a pattern here? That’s right. They’re all old news. Maybe new takes on old news, but if I wanted that I’d go to a fan fiction website and read to my heart’s content.

No, this isn’t right… what happened to the Squaresoft I knew and loved? Nothing, it seems, as you’ll soon know if you Read More »

I love you guys. You know that, right? Here: enjoy.

This is short, and I realize that, but I’m bored and in China. I’ve gotta amuse myself somehow, right?

In case some of you weren’t aware, and you really should have been, Zach has recently gotten himself over to Japan (Kyoto, specifically).

I don’t know about you, but for him, it’s basically a dream come true. This semester is like an academic wet dream for him, come to life. The difference? It’s not just in his pants. It’s everywhere.

That sounded wrong.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure we’ll all be seeing tons of new content from him. Zach will be on anime/manga/Akihabara overload, and I somewhat selfishly expect to benefit from it. Consider this a challenge to our favorite geek of all things Japanese; I’m not sure if it’ll see the light of day, as I’m just a contributor for the blog and have to submit everything for review from Zach, but if so, more power to him. That’ll mean Zach has balls… otaku balls. Made out of old crushed up old Nintendo cartridges, or decapitated pokemon, or something.

armored-core-4-3Playing Armored Core: for Answer and enjoying my mecha-simulation/nerd-time has lead me to an interesting question: which anime genre would you most like to see made into a sim?

Everything is crystallizing.

Simply, going to Japan is finally becoming a reality on something other than paper. Over the past few days, a couple of factors have driven this home:

1) My mother won’t stop bothering me about logistics.

2) I finally got my actual acceptance packet from Ritsumeikan Kyoto.

and, most recently, 3) I’m going to be doing language exchange sessions with a Japanese student at OU whom I am contacting as I write this. Read More »

Acceptance

Acceptance

As you can see, I’ve been accepted into Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. I don’t know exactly when I’ll be leaving, but rest assured I’ll stay in Norman for as long as possible (read: March) before leaving for home, then Japan. That said, I won’t have classes next semester in the mean time, and hopefully I’ll be getting a job (anyone have any suggestions?).

While I’m there I’ll be maintaining this blog, but my professional writing major friend has convinced me that writing a study abroad blog will be a good thing. I can’t help but agree. So when I post here, I’ll probably post there. Hopefully, since I’m bringing my camera with me, I’ll have more pictures than I know what to do with. Talk about which, are there any anime pilgrimages you think I should make while I’m there other than the Comic-cons and Akihabara?

Anyway, I’m off to study for finals and play some Persona 4 before my last final at 8am tomorrow (eugh! why 8? why Friday? I need to get back to Corpus!).

以上です。

newSo, wracking my mind for possible shows for the next two weeks at anime club has left me with a couple:

REC – A story about an Audrey Hepburn obsessed voice actress that’s very short, but fairly cute and memorable.

Ah! My Goddess – The original OVA which started it all (after the manga). Refreshing, interesting, and, above all, short, it’s the perfect choice for a quick show.

Finally, we could do a combination of 1 hour shows, one per week. Personally, I’m partial to this combination: 5 cm Per Second one week and then the Love Hina Xmas Special the next.

Tell me what you think.

The state of this blog leaves me in despair!

The state of this blog has left me in despair!

I’ve been a bad blogger, haven’t I? Not writing for long periods of time and finally posting stuff that isn’t horribly engaging. Oh, well. It’s a trap that a lot of bloggers fall into. This last week, though, I’ve been sick and had tons of stuff to do between tests and study abroad preparation.

Talk about which, I’ve gotten into Ritsumeikan Kyoto for next semester if everything goes smoothly, which I have no doubt it will. What this means for the blog, though, is that once I get there, I’ll hopefully switch to a journal-style recount of experiences while there in addition to the continuance of anime updates you’ve grown unaccustomed to.

Also, my professional writing major friend and I are going to start work on a visual novel project (non-ero, sorry), so I’ll probably give some updates and character designs for that as we get them done. I’m looking forward to this mostly because I’ve got an extended (read: 4 month) winter break before I go to Japan, and he’s got the same break since he’s headed to Yunnan province, China at the same time.

As far as animes go, though, I’ve got a couple of must-watch recommendations for the current season, some of them updates on promising series I talked about before (links are posted): Kannagi, Gundam 00, Nodame Cantabile Paris-hen, Toaru Majutsu no Index, and Chaos;Head. Each of them has come along strong and shows promise. Kannagi is only a half-season, though, which makes me a bit sad. However, it’s a strong season, and you’d be shortchanging yourself as a viewer by not at least checking a couple of them out.

I’d have liked this post to be longer, but sadly I’ve got Japanese homework to do before getting to bed at some ungodly hour. Wish me luck!

I know you all who cruise the site are familiar with lurking… because you do it way too much! I want comments, heated discussions, all out arguments about romance animes! I don’t care, as long as you keep it SFW.

Here: I’ll even give you a nice picture to coax you out!
